BDAC was founded to represent and provide services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living on Djaara Country.

Job Description

About the Position

 

Merrijig Mooroopook, meaning “Healthy Spirits” in Djaara language, is a culturally grounded, therapeutic initiative designed to engage men who use family violence in a respectful and healing way whilst operating under the Men’s Behaviour Change Framework.

Reporting to the Therapeutic Team Leader, the Men’s Practitioner works alongside men who use family violence providing specialist support, holistic case management and facilitation of our Merrijig Mooroopook group work.

Key Responsibilties

  • Facilitate group work focused on Men’s Behavioural Change with cultural elements to participants within the Merrijig Mooroopook program
  • Conduct intake interviews and assess participants eligibility for the Merrijig Mooroopook program
  • Provide high level case management to participants engaged in the Merrijig Mooroopook Program
  • Work with families to ensure that their cultural needs are identified early and embedded into practice
  • Work alongside of Specialist Family Violence Practitioners and other stakeholders to ensure comprehensive risk assessment and case planning for families experiencing family violence
  • Support men who use violence to meet their self-identified goals mitigating risk
  • Facilitate Men’s camps
  • Assist in planning for Merrijig Mooroopook and Men’s Camps including engaging Elders and respected Community members
  • Provide expert secondary consultation to internal BDAC staff who are working alongside of Community affected by family violence
  • Attendance at Bendigo Courts, specifically on Koori Magistrates Court and Koori County Court sitting days;
  • To provide support and assistance to Community members throughout their court proceedings
  • Represent the program and facilitate referral pathways, to ensure individuals are connected with appropriate services and support

Desired Skills and Experience

Key Selection Criteria

  • Understanding of the ACCHO environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to address a range of complex and diverse needs, including the importance of culture and Community connection
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the complexities of family violence and the impacts on families and children
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, assess and prioritise risks and needs of Community members in a whole of family approach
  • Well developed interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to participate collaboratively and constructively within teams of peers, staff, and other stakeholders, as well as initiative and effective personal judgement when working alone.
  • Demonstrated de-escalation and conflict-resolution skills
  • Demonstrated case management and case work experience with a willingness to undergo training for group facilitation work
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines and/or targets
  • Strong computer skills, ability to use a range of software and IT based reporting systems
  • Demonstrated experience referring to and collaborating with local service networks

 

Education, Training and/or Competencies.

Mandatory

  • Recognised Social Work degree or a similar welfare or behavioural related degree which includes: a) a primary focus on child development, human behaviour, family dynamics and/or impacts of trauma; and preferably, b) practical component such as counselling or case work practice or a willingness to work toward the qualification in line with the mandatory minimum qualifications policy.

Preferred/ desired

  • Previous experience working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community members or in an Aboriginal organisation (preferred)
  • Professional comprehensive training in MARAM Adults Using Family Violence will be highly regarded
