The Senior Youth Connector leads the development and day-to-day coordination of BDAC’s Youth Hub and programs, ensuring they are culturally safe, youth-led and grounded in Culture, Community and Country.
The role strengthens young people’s wellbeing, cultural identity, leadership and connection by working closely with young people, families, Elders, Community, schools, internal teams and partner organisations. Working alongside the Youth Education Coordinator and other team members to integrate broader regular youth activities with the homework program.
The Senior Youth Connector provides guidance, mentoring and practice support to Youth Connectors, coordinates opportunities for young people’s voices to shape programs and decision-making, and contributes to continuous improvement, reporting and delivery of BDAC’s strategic commitment to expand youth services and activities.
Job Description
About the Position
Program Development, Leadership and Coordination
Plan and oversee the day-to-day running of the hub, including activities, coordinating staff and volunteers, and ensuring safe, consistent and engaging operations.
Embed youth-led program design and voice across the hub by supporting the Dhelkunya Djuwimitj (Make good Leader) program, consultation processes and shared decision-making, ensuring programs reflect what young people have told us.
Build strong relationships with young people, families, Elders, Community, schools and partner organisations to strengthen participation, cultural connection and coordinated support.
Lead programs and opportunities that strengthen connection to Country, Community and Culture and respond to young people’s goals, needs and aspirations.
Work collaboratively with the Youth Education Coordinator and Youth Connectors to support the day-to-day delivery of the homework and learning program and ensure it is integrated with regular youth activities that strengthen engagement, learning and connection.
Supervision, Mentoring and Practice Support
Provide day-to-day guidance, mentoring and practice support to Youth Connectors to build confidence, capability and culturally safe, youth-led practice.
Model reflective practice and support staff and young people to take up leadership, participation and decision-making opportunities within the hub and broader youth initiatives.
Support staff and young people to create welcoming, inclusive and strengths-based spaces grounded in Culture, Community and Connection.
Monitoring the needs of young people and managing risk
Considering the individual needs and wellbeing of young people participating including the need for warm referrals, coordination with schools and other services and families.
Working with young people and families when issues arise including behaviours of concern, risks or interpersonal issues.
Overseeing day-to day safety requirement including risk management and feedback systems.
Operations, Administration and Reporting
Oversee operational and administrative of the hub and its programs, including scheduling, record keeping and resources,
Monitor delivery, contribute to reporting and evaluation, and use feedback, participation data and community input to strengthen program quality and accountability.
Support service coordination, referrals and continuous improvement to ensure the hub remains responsive to young people and community priorities.
Key Selection Criteria
(must address in order for your application to be accepted)
Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, with strong cultural knowledge and connection to local community.
Experience working closely with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people, families, and communities—both one-on-one and in group settings grounded in understanding of strengths and challenges faced by young mob.
Demonstrated leadership capability in community roles, work, sport or other community activities. Ability to guide, mentor and support others to build strong, consistent and culturally grounded practice.
Ability to coordinate youth programs and activities that are culturally safe, youth-led and responsive to Community priorities.
Demonstrated ability to assess risk, manage situations calmly and effectively, implement child safety principles and respond to issues that arise through family liaison, warm referrals and stakeholder engagement.
Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, especially with young people, families, and service providers.
Desired Skills and Experience
Preferred/ desired
Previous experience working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community members or in an Aboriginal organisation.
Experience coordinating a youth space or community hub.
Mental health training (e.g. Youth Mental Health First Aid, ASIST, SafeTALK)
