Job Description
About the Position
Garinga Bupup (growing baby) program focuses on providing an immediate and culturally safe early intervention support to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander unborn children and their mothers in order to prevent unborn reports to Child Protection.
Garinga Bupup supports mothers through pregnancy by building strong relationships with parents, engaging mothers in antenatal services and providing pregnancy education including health and nutrition. Other intensive supports include, developing a birth plan, support with sleep and feeding routines. As well as connecting families to playgroups and parenting supports.
Key Responsibilities
Engage with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander families using culturally safe and trauma-informed practice
Demonstrate understanding of the impacts of colonisation, Aboriginal parenting practices, and maternal and child health
Support families experiencing complex trauma and navigate Child Protection systems
Provide confidential, client-centred support to improve safety, stability, and developmental outcomes for children (including in utero)
Support families to build on their understanding of child development and parenting strategies
Use a relational approach to help families access and navigate services
Embed cultural needs into all aspects of casework and support planning
Maintain accurate and timely case documentation
Collaborate with stakeholders, including Bendigo Health and Maternal Child Health Nurse and other services
Participate in training, supervision, reflective practice, team meetings and professional development
Desired Skills and Experience
About You
• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal history, culture, and the role of Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs), with a strong commitment to cultural safety and Aboriginal self determination.
• Demonstrated understanding the Children, Youth and Families Act 2005.
• Understanding of Aboriginal parenting practices
• Understanding of parenting strategies and ability to implement these when working with families
• Knowledge of child development within utero and ability to facilitate this knowledge to families
• Ability to work flexible hours to support families with attending classes such as antenatal, birthing and parenting classes
• Well-developed interpersonal and communications skills, with a demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively with others
• Excellent time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines
• Ability to prepare briefs, letters, emails and reports using clear, concise and grammatically correct language.
• Ability to collect and record evaluation data
• Ability to engage and build meaningful relationships with Aboriginal families and community through a relational, strengths based approach while maintaining clear professional boundaries.
• Ability to work collaboratively with Bendigo Health and Maternal Child Health Nurse and stakeholders to support culturally safe, coordinated responses for families.
• Ability to collect and record evaluation data
